I hated my first semester at BU. I chose to go to BU despite receiving no financial aid because I thought it was my "dream" school. I also applied and got into Brandeis and NYU with generous scholarship packages, but I turned down those schools because BU convinced me that I would be happy here. First, the social life is nothing unless you like to go to frat parties. There is no school spirit and no community. The people are arrogant, snobby, and most got into the school because they could afford it, not because they deserved to go here. Also, as far as diversity, there is a huge Asian population that segregates themselves from the rest of the school. I found it hard to make friends here. I also dormed in Warren which is such a joke. Do NOT believe people when they tell you to live in Warren as a freshman, you will hate it. I got put on a "Core" floor even though I'm not in core and so everyone on my floor was only friends with other core kids.As for academics, freshman classes are a complete joke. I don't even attend my psych lectures because my professor puts the notes online and it is straight from the book. My required WR 100 class is like a high school freshman english class, which after taking AP in high school was boring and tedious. My stats professor and tf were wonderful people, but spoke such accented english they were hard to understand.Overall, it is hard to get into clubs, organizations or sports unless you really make an effort and know what you want to do before you come here.My spirit was broken at BU, and I'm now applying to small schools where I will get a good education and be more than a number. Most kids at BU are bitter because they couldn't get into NYU (and thought I was crazy for not going there) and most chose BU because their significant others also chose to go to school in the Boston area. You will not get financial aid. Do not go here if you don't, because it will be a waste of your $45,000. I did love Boston (I'm a MA girl), except for the people who were not actually from the city (aka college kids and professionals) who had bad attitudes.Oh yeah, and I won a national writing award, but I still couldn't test out of WR 100. BU is ridiculous.
