First of all, thee is nothing stupid about majoring in education, social work or any other sort of artsy major. Education is about doing what one likes. Basically your reasoning is ridiculous, for real. Everyone has the right to major in whatever the hell he or she wants. |
It's really interesting to me that you rank yourself as "super brilliant", because the comment you make above is downright stupid, not to mention mean-spirited. You may be good at math, and you may land that top job at an investment firm, but you really have no conception whatsoever of what life is like beyond your own navel. Everyone has different strengths and different contributions to make to society. If you think that people who go into education or social work are any less important or intelligent than you and your math colleagues, then it's clear to me that your college experience thus far has failed to mould you into a mature, intelligent, and caring person. Fortunately, there's still time… |
People like you drive others like me who are considering NYU to believe that everyone there thinks they're awesome, better than everyone else and condescending. AND New York University happens to draw "artsy" people because NYC is the art capital of the United States. I should know, I grew up there. So get off your high horse and open your eyes. Also, there are more than 2 types of people at NYU. Don't be naive. Also, "super brilliant"—C-A-T-E-G-O-R-Y = Category |
Major: Math (This Major's Salary over time)
NYU can be a great place to go to college if you let it be by putting forth the effort. The CAS/Courant math department is truly a behemoth amongst math departments, it has the best professors and students in the country. This summer, I'm working for a commodities trading firm, and next year after I graduate I'll probably be working there full time. The NYU name helped tremendously in my job search, and the math department is here is very reknowned. There are some at NYU who complain about the high tuition, but they are usually morons who don't understand the concept of caveat emptor, I've also noticed they tend to major in stupid things like education or social work and don't want to go into high paying careers. It's like why are you complaining about the high tuition, you knew what it was coming in? Basically, there are 2 types of people at NYU. The first type are ones who come to NYU for great academics but also have fun partying in New York, these people study things like math, finance, econ, philosophy, and film, pre-med, pre-law, etc. NYU can be a great fit for this type of person, i.e. one who appreciates both great academics and an urban atmosphere. The second type are ones who come here to only be "part of the city" (these people ususally study things like art, drama, education, social work, etc). This type has no concern for academics and tend to fail at NYU at rates much higher than the first type…after all, school is expensive, and the city gets old really fast if you don't have a ton of spending money from rich parents. Translation: despite the greatness of this city, you won't succeed at NYU if you're only here for the city and not the great academics. If you fall into this catagory, think long and hard before coming to NYU.
