Rensselaer is a very demanding school with a difficult workload and tough courses of study. When I went there, there were few women. There was no opportunity for a normal social life. There were also not many opportunities for those of us who were very broad in our interests. For instance, while I enjoy math & science, I also am interested in music, philosophy, sociology, psychology, architecture, art, anthropology, English, etc. As a management major, I was able to take a number of psychology, philosophy and interdisciplinary science courses. I even took two acting courses. Student activities were extensive. I participated in the ski club, skydiving club, my fraternity and student government, among several other activities. Troy was almost surreal in its poverty. It has gotten much better in recent years. Most students who attended Rensselaer with me were very bright. While many fit the nerd stereotype, others were very well rounded and interesting. The school is very progressive, interdisciplinary and entrepreneurial. There are abundant opportunities to get involved in leading edge research or new ventures. I am jealous that the school is now building a world-class multi-media performing arts center to compliment its unique EMPAC program. I learned a lot about math and science and philosophy and management at RPI. I honed my political and leadership skills as an active participant in student government. And I enjoyed myself skiing, playing trumpet in the pep band and throwing fraternity parties. I think that Rensselaer is one of the best schools in the world for students with a strong interest in science and technology. If you are unsure of what interests you, you might consider another school. In retrospect, schools like Reed, Oberlin or Berkeley might have been better for me, but I am very broad in my interests and very liberal. Having said that, I do not regret my undergraduate experience at Rensselaer.
